湖南科技学院始建于1941年，前身为湖南省立第七师范学校，经历了湖南省立第七师范学校、湖南师范学院零陵分院、零陵师范专科学校、零陵学院等几个阶段，2004年更名为湖南科技学院，现已成为一所集理、工、文、法、经济、管理、教育于一体的公办全日制普通本科院校，是一所经教育部批准，由湖南省教育厅主管的普通本科院校。
学院学科专业齐全，现有普通本科在校学生14000人，成人教育学生6000人。在职教职员工1150人，其中，专任教师890人，教授85人、副教授130人、博士、硕士共450人、享受政府特殊津贴的专家11人、曾宪梓教师奖获得者9人。学校占地面积807334平方米，固定资产10687万元，建筑面积25万多平方米，教学仪器设备4100多万元。学院先后被被评为"湖南省文明单位"、“全国普通高等学校教学管理工作先进单位”、"全国普通高校后勤工作先进单位"、"湖南省党建工作先进单位"、"湖南省毕业生就业工作先进单位"，被列为教育部大学英语教学改革试点高校。
Hunan University of Science and Engineering (HUSE) is a provincial regular full-time institution of higher education on a four-year basis, upgraded in March, 2002 with the approval of the Ministry of Education from Lingling Junior Normal College to Lingling College, which was renamed Hunan University of Science and Engineering in July, 2004, covering fields of science, engineering, liberal arts, economy, management, law, and education. HUSE currently occupies an area of 807,334 sq. m, with a total floorage of 250,000 sq. m., 106.87 million yuan of fixed assets.and a 106.87 million yuan’s worth of teaching apparatuses and equipment. There are1,150 in-service staff, with 890 full-time teachers, among whom 85 are full professors,130 associate professors, 450 Doctor's or Master's degree holders,11 recipients of special grants from the government,9 winners of Zeng Xianzi Education Fund Award. It has been awarded the titles of "Civilized Unit of Hunan Province", “National Advanced Unit of Teaching Management of Higher Education”, "National Advanced Unit of Logistics work of Higher Education", "Advanced Unit of Party Building of Hunan Province", and "Advanced Unit of Graduate Employment of Hunan Province", and has been listed by the Ministry of Education as an experimental unit for college English teaching.
